Crime Tips

Following up the crime update which I sent last week as part of neighborhood issues, please note that there has been a recent burglary on Alvarado Road. Berkeley police advise that the residents were away for only a short time in the early evening and did not set their alarm system. Please remember to set your alarm, even if only heading out shopping.

Additionally, this incident and others are possibly related to activity by young people going door to door in the neighborhood to "sell magazines". According to Berkeley police, they actually DO offer magazines for sale, and if purchased and paid for, the magazines will arrive. However the youths (most in their early 20's) may also be using this as an opportunity to determine whether or not anyone is home at a residence, or to "case" for later return. These youths were present in the neighborhood the evening that the Alvarado burglary took place, and there may be a connection, but it is not known for sure. Be careful when solicitors come to your door. Ask questions. Find out who they are representing. Ask their names.

Finally, I regret to pass on that the bike thefts which were reported to be waning by both Berkeley & Oakland PD's, seem to be back. A Vicente road resident had a bicycle stolen in the early morning hours when a garage door was left open. Keep you garage doors closed and lock your bikes even in your garage. We will continue to pass on this information as it is provided by the police departments for the area.
