December 20 -  The North Hills Phoenix Association is sponsoring a meeting about the sudden increase in crime in the hills and the lack of policy. The meeting will be held at Kaiser School with Mayor Jerry Brown [Note the new location] on December 22 at 7 PM.

November 16 -  A number of people are concerned that erosion can happen in the place where eucalyptus trees have been removed near Grizzly Peak. Tom Klatt is responsible for this program.

November 13 - Today's Chronicle reports that Emeryville's Bay Street has just reinstituted parking fees from $1 to $5. There is an on-line petition protesting this action.

November 3 - Peggy Stinnett of the Oakland Tribune has written an article about North Hill's lawsuit which protested the City's lack of enforcement of its creek ordinance.

November 1 - We have just posted our October newsletter.

October 24 -  The North Hills Phoenix Association asked candidates for BART and AC Transit on issues related to our area. We have compiled their answers to these transportation issues.

October 23 -  Every year, flowers and flags commemorate the approximate place where Officer John Grubensky and five Oakland Hills residents died on Charing Cross Road near Schooner Hill. We have pictures from the North Hills Phoenix Association picnic which was both a neighborhood gathering and remembrance of October 1991 fire. Neighbors old and new attended this event.

October 5 -  BART District 3 and AC Transit at-large candidate debates will be conducted by the League of Women Voters at 7 PM and 7:30 PM, respectively, on Thursday, October 7, at Oakland City Hall, Hearing Room 1.

October 2 -  Here is a sample ballot for people living in our area from the League of Women Voters.

October 2 -  We have some details (in Excel and PDF format) on Measure CC which will be on the November ballot. It proposes to establish a parcel tax in the East Bay Hills to secure a 15 year strategic fuel reductions in the East Bay Regional Park District. More information on that measure can be found on EBRPD's web page.

September 24 -  The third annual meeting of the Claremont Canyon Conservancy will be held on Sunday on November 7 from 4-6 PM at the Claremont Hotel.

September 24 - UC Berkeley has written a short article about the clearing along Grizzly Peak Blvd.

September 24 - Close to Home presents a public talk and slide show on Monday, October 4 at 7:30 PM at Montclair Presbyterian Church in Oakland. John Steere who is an environmental/habitat restoration planner and founder of East Bay Citizens for Creek Restoration and author of Restoring the Estuary will give the presentation. There is a requested donation of $5 (K-12 free).

September 5- Oakland's Creek-to-Bay Day will be on September 18 from 9 AM to noon. The first 1,000 volunteers will receive a free T-shirt. Contact the City of Oakland Public Works for more information.

September 5 - The Thursday, September 2nd meeting of the Oakland Wildfire Prevention Board was cancelled due to schedule conflicts. Regular meetings are expected to be at 6:30 PM on the fourth Thursday of every month at City Hall, starting in September.

August 29 - The Montclair Safety Fair will be held at the Montclair Park, located at 6300 Moraga Avenue, on Saturday, September 11th from 10 AM to 3 PM.

August 12 - Keep Oakland Beautiful is offering us an opportunity to plant 200 daffodils at public locations, such as parks. For applications and additional information on this program, contact Keep Oakland Beautiful at fverdin@oaklandnet.com or by telephone: 510-424-5126.

August 12 - There will be special presentation from Jerry Kent, former assistant general manager of East Bay Regional Park District, on the fire history of the East Bay Hills. The Diablo Fire Safe Council is sponsoring this community meeting on Wednesday August 18 at 6:30- 9:00 PM. The meeting will be held at the East Bay Regional Park District's Trudeau Training Center which is located at 11500 Skyline Blvd.

July 11 - A recent benefit of the Wildfire Prevention Assessment District is that we are now permitted to put out unlimited yard trimmings. Collection will be on our regularly scheduled yard waste collection day. For more details see this link.

May 10 - There will be a public meeting how to spend money from the bond Measure DD – Oakland’s Trust for Clean Water and Safe Parks. The meeting will be held Wednesday, May 26 from 7:00–9:00 PM in Oakland City Hall. The goals are to receive community input on a plan for the next 18 months for the creek restoration and acquisition programs and a long term plan for creek restoration and acquisition programs. May 10 - The guidelines for design review will be discussed by the Design Review Committee of the Planning Commission on Wednesday, May 12 at 5 PM.

April 28 - The City of Oakland has scheduled a meeting for input to the new design review procedures for one- and two-unit residences at Montera Middle School on Wednesday May 5 from 7 to 9 PM. We also have a summary of the proposed regulations.

April 12 - Bruce Black, a founding member of the North Hills Phoenix Association, recently passed away. Bruce was courageous, kind, caring and thoughtful. He always provided wise advise to the organization. His last project was to establish a trail from Caldecott Field to Grizzly Peak. He had a long history of service to Oakland, which included being the Chairman of the Oakland Planning and Zoning Committee. His friends from NHPA will deeply miss him. A memorial service will be held on May 22 at the Oakland Zoo's Snow Building at 2 PM.

April 10 - You can celebrate Earth Day on Saturday, April 24 by working in your neighborhood 9am-noon. Volunteers will receive T-shirts and snacks.

April 10 - Recently, the voters of Oakland passed Measure DD, which including funding for creeks. There will be a meeting at Oakland City Hall on Monday, April 26 at 7 PM to discuss how money will be allocated for creaks. Contact watersheds@oaklandnet.com for more information.

March 27 - The March newsletter is out.

March 19 - The CORE 3 Advanced Hands-On Training is coming up. The first class is on Wednesday April 21, 7-9 PM and the second class occurs on Saturday April 24 from 9-3 at the Fire Training Center. CORE 3 is open to residents who have completed CORE 1 and CORE 2.  Please contact Harriet at 238-6351 for more information.

March 10 - Join your neighbors for the Memorial Garden Work Party on Saturday, March 13 starting from 10 AM. Bring your lunch and something to drink. The location is the Memorial Garden at the bottom of Hiller Drive - near the light on Highway 13. Activities include weeding, planting, and having fun.

March 6 - Berkeley Laboratory describes NHPA's efforts to install guardrails on Grizzly Peak.

February 27 - UC Berkeley will be clearing eucalyptus trees on Grizzly Peak starting on March 1. This time they plan to remove the roots. The UC Berkeley paper also describes these efforts and interviews Bill McClung and our past-president David Kessler.

February 27 - Because of the hard work from vice-president Judy Proller, the City of Oakland has installed a guardrail on Grizzly Peak in an area between Claremont and Centennial Drive. The North Hills Phoenix Association has requested that a second be put at Lookout Point approximately a half mile west of Claremont on Grizzly Peak. That spot has been the site of many accidents.

February 22 - David Kessler has written the minutes of the annual meeting. We also have a slide show from the event.

February 21- We have updated our election information page with a contribution from Candidate Jane Brunner. Also in the news, Oakland Police just arrested some people on Grandview who were acting suspiciously when they claimed to be selling magazine subscriptions. February 16 - The North Hills Phoenix Association asked a series of questions to several of the local candidates in the March Election. You can find their response and other information about their campaign on our web site. Candidates Henry Chang and Melanie Shelby submitted answers for their race for the Oakland City Council At Large race. John Russo, who is running alone for City Attorney also sent a statement. Finally, Dennis Chaconas and Enrique Palacios, sent answers to our questions in the Alameda County School Board Election.

February 14 - The North Hills Phoenix Association is organizing a Candidates Forum for the upcoming March 2 election. We have invited candidates for City Attorney, City Council, and Alameda County Board of Education Trustee, to come make a presentation to our members. The forum will be held in the auditorium of Kaiser School on Hiller Drive for the night of Wednesday, February 25 from 7 to 9 PM. !

January 25 - The League of Women Voters has created a web site where you can find out who is running in the March Election. The information includes all local ballot issues and candidates.

January 23 - Our January newsletter is available. Representatives of the Oakland Firefighters Random Acts of Kindness will be making a public one-hour presentation as part of the Charity Sundays program sponsored by PsHome. The presentation will be made January 25th at 2 PM at PsHome in the Montclair Village. Contact Cindy Chin (Oakland Firefighters Random Acts) at 510-597-5034 for more information. The Montclair Safety & Improvement Council (MSIC) has established a new web site to discuss safety and improvement issues for the greater Montclair Village area.

January 9 -The Fire District passed by a very large margin.

January 3 -There will a public hearing on the proposed Fire District at Oakland City Hall on Tuesday, January 6 at 7 PM. The meeting should be lively as there is active opposition to the district.
