| In 2000, when you honored me to become Oakland's first elected City Attorney, I pledged competence and action. My office has delivered. We've been competent. Last year alone we reduced Oakland's total legal expenses by over $3.5 million. As promised, we cut the amount taxpayers were paying for expensive outside lawyers by over $1.1 million. That's the lowest amount since 1996. Every dollar that our office saved was another dollar available for public safety services, parks, and libraries - especially vital in these difficult budget times. We've also taken action. My innovative "Neighborhood Law Corps" has busted problem liquor stores, torn down criminal hotels and drug dens, cracked down on blight, and cleaned up illegal dumping. Our office is recognized throughout California as a champion for open government and consumer protection. Together, with the community, we've done a lot. There's much left to do. Please vote for more change and reform. |
